Hey everyone!
I am almost done with the New Testament. This has been a great semester filled with lots of learning experiences and newfound love for the Holy Bible.
This week I was reading in 2 Peter about some of the Christlike Attributes that we should have. In Chapter 1 verses 5-7 it lists attributes that we should add to our lives beginning with faith and ending with charity.
Faith is the first attribute on this list. Faith is the desire to follow Jesus Christ even though we can't see Him. Faith is an active word. If we do not act on our faith, then it is good for nothing. I don't think it is a coincidence that faith is the first attribute because it leads us to action. It leads us to follow the rest of the attributes.
The next one on the list is virtue. Virtue is a higher, holier way of living. It includes keeping your thoughts, words, and actions clean. We are meant to think clean, speak clean, and act clean. When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we want to be cleaner than we are now. Virtue helps us out with that.
Knowledge is next. When we are faithful and we are clean, we are open to learning and receiving the things that the Lord will have us learn. When our minds are not filled with unclean thoughts we have the potential to learn and grow in our knowledge.
Next is temperance. Some of the things that we will learn may be hard for us to understand and sometimes the way that we learn is through trials and hard times. When we are temperate, we are slow to anger, slow to question why things in our life are happening the way that they are. We are calm, peaceful and understanding that sometimes, the lessons we are to learn take time.
After temperance is patience. Temperance and patience are similar but are not exactly the same. Temperance means one is slow to anger but patience means you submit willingly to whatever the Lord asks you to do. Patience means being able to kind, calm and unaffected by the hard things that go on in your life. Patience is key for learning.
Godliness comes after patience. Godliness means having the ability to put off the natural man and become more like God. Godliness means not reverting back to our old habits and regressing back to where we began. It means moving forward and continually trying to be the best versions of ourselves. It, like virtue, is a higher way of living. It means being more than who we are naturally.
Brotherly kindness is the next one. When we have reached the point where we are faithful, virtuous, knowledgeable, temperate, patient and godly, our entire outlook changes. Suddenly we are more kind to those around us. We have new eyes, a new way of looking at the world and we are more kind to those around us. Brotherly kindness goes beyond just being kind to those we like; it extends to being kind to our enemies or those that we do not like.
Finally the last attribute is charity. Charity is the pure love of Christ. It is unconditional, never-ending, and constant. After passing through the rest of these attributes, we arrive at charity. Like brotherly kindness, charity extends to everyone. We love everyone that we meet as God loves them. We see them the way that God sees them. And we become like God eventually.
Of course, there are other attributes that are not mentioned that are important as well such as hope and diligence that are just as important. Another thing to keep in mind is that we are not perfect. All of us are at different points in our lives. One person may be very good at faith, but struggles with temperance. Or one person may be very good at charity, but struggles with knowledge. All of us are different and we all have different trials in our lives.
The point is that God wants us to return to live with Him. This, tied together with the Gospel of Jesus Christ can set us in the right direction to eventually become like He is. As we are faithful and diligent in our journey, we can have the hope to return to live with Heavenly Father again.
